My Pencil's Name is Stubby

My favorite time to sketch is at night, in bed with a favorite TV show on the tube. No kids, no chores, just me and good ol' Stubby.
This is the koi pond at the Secret Garden in Seoul, Korea. When I went there seven years ago, there seemed to be about 100 colorful fish darting through the water. We went again last month, and I couldn't see a single one. Perhaps they were away on vacation.
You know how Maggie Simpson has a nemesis named Baby Gerald? I think my daughter Emma has a nemesis, too. There's a little boy we used to pass almost every morning on the way to school. They used to stare at each other sideways as they passed. The little boy's school uniform consisted of a grey bowler hat, a grey jacket, and grey shorts. Really cute uniform, and very reminiscent of 100 years ago. But he even had to wear those shorts during the winter. Brrrrr!

ps. Almost every elementary school child here is required to wear a hat. On sunny days, at least. It's incredibly cute to see a row of tiny kids in bright yellow hats!

IF - Canned

If you're going to be an expat, Tokyo is a lovely place to be. But the tough part of being an expat, wherever you are, is that friends are always leaving for new assignments. My husband is in the financial sector, and as you know, times are tough. Though he still has his job, many of our friends here have gotten canned, and they are leaving for work in other countries.

This is our family saying "so long for now" to some very good friends who are headed to Hong Kong. I drew us as aliens, because that's what we basically are here -- foreigners.

My kids insisted I include Daddy's facial hair, even though I protested that these aliens are smooth-bodied. They're just looking out for Daddy, because Daddy's quite proud of his facial hair.

My Cup Runneth Over

I have a thing for teacups. I don't know why. Wedgewood jasperware -- oh so pretty. I imagined my girls enjoying teatime in a giant teacup.

Emma: "Why did you squash me and Nona in a cup?"

Emma wanted to add to the picture, but I wouldn't let her. Bad mommy. It's just a picture, after all. So Emma drew her own version of the teacup tea party. She added mommy and daddy and our crazy pooch Oz.

I like her version better.
Though Dad doesn't usually wear a skirt at home.

IF - Enough

True story.

*Oh, they knew I was joking. Eventually. Ok, I did let them sweat it out a bit,
but still, they kept poking my forehead anyway. And they enjoyed doing it.

Have I traumatized my kids enough?

IF - Foggy

What do you do when your kid asks you a question you can't answer?

One day, as we were driving through some thick fog, my kids asked me, "What IS fog, anyway?"
"Why it''s...a cloud that's come down to kiss the earth," I replied. It could be true. Wouldn't it be nice if it were true?

Then one day as I drove along the Hudson River, I saw a cloud, and it appeared to be hovering just inches above the still water. She was beautiful as she kissed the river.

I've included a few tiny Totoros in the hillside as an homage to my idol, Miyazaki.

Wow, gosh, an award!

I woke up this morning, went to my computer, and was absolutely floored by a wonderful, wonderful surprise. I've been nominated for an award! It was even more touching, knowing that it was from artists whom I wholeheartedly admire and aspire to be like one day: Eric Barclay, Edrian Thomidis, Roberta, and Carli. I am humbled by their art. Thanks, guys, you really did make my heart sing and cry at the same time -- in a good way.

The rules of accepting are as follows:-

1) Put the logo on your blog.
2) Add a link to the person who awarded you.
3) Nominate at least 7 other blogs.
4) Add links to those blogs on yours.
5) Leave a message for your nominees on their blogs.

*sigh* It was so hard to whittle my list of nominees down to 7. There are so many artists who inspire me, so many who are deserving of awards. Well, the rules say "at least", so I'm going to push it and add an 8th.

And 9th.

I could add to this list forever, so here goes before it goes on forever:

Connie Martin
Linda Sarah
Raluca C.
Ms. Froggie
Juan Carlos Frederico
May Y. Chan
Deborah Ross
Alberta & Ava

Please visit their sites and be prepared to be awed by their fantastic talent! THANK YOU!

IF - Sour

On Friday, my daughter Emma asked, "Can we not go anywhere today?"
"Oooookay," I answered. "Why?"
Emma put her face close to my ear and whispered, "Because I want to draw a mustache on myself."
"Ok, Emma, go ahead," I chuckled. So Emma immediately ran to the mirror and drew a big, lopsided purple mustache on her face with a Crayola marker. She was immensely proud of her mustache, prancing and dancing about, making faces and growling like a pirate.
When her father came home, he took one amused look at her and called out, "Mustachio!" Emma's wonderfully whimsical mood immediately turned sour, and she stomped off in a huff.
