Illustration Friday - Burning

My kid: "What are those, chickens?"
Me: "What? No, they are not chickens! Gah!"

So last week, I invited a friend and her son over for movie night. I had it all planned. Before they arrived, I went out and got two large pies -- one combo, one cheese. And I got five different flavors of popcorn. Woohoo! To keep the pizzas warm, I shoved the boxes into the oven and turned the dial to "Keep Warm". Then I took the dog out for a quick walk before our friends arrived.

When I returned, smoke was billowing out of the oven. One of the boxes had caught on fire. I tried to whack the flames out with a towel, but that only made it jump to the other side of the box and black ash spew everywhere. Yikes! Finally, I grabbed a cup of water and threw it on the fire. Sssssssssss. Out. I shed a quick tear for the half-pie I lost and tried my best to pick out the ashes from the remaining slices. Eh, they'll never know.

As we were watching the movie, I heard my friend's son mutter, "Why does the pizza taste like smoke?"

He he he! Clearly, that was a wood-fired pizza - smoky taste adds authenticity :)
The little flames are awesome!

Oh, I love to hear of culinary disasters! It makes me feel so much better. lol! And I agree, the smoke was a flavoring - it's all how you spin it. Love the drawing! xox

And here I am, buying Smoke flavor! I am too tired and have no energy to jump all over the place with enthusiasm over your once again fantastic and wonderful drawing so I will just tell you how much I love your mind. You are a perpetual source of artistry and mirth. I will never stop loving your creations. They are gifts, indeed and you just keep giving. Thank you!

I have burned many things going off to do something "just for a minute." The warrior pirate girl fighting the flames is a fabulous interpretation!!! Hope she catches that one climbing behind her. Those flames are both villainous and cute!

aimee said...

wood-fired pizza, baby! people pay extra for that, because it has the handcrafted touch. guffawed at the story and the drawing. clearly, we are cut from the same cloth. we even have identical reheating skills.

Awesome picture and story! Actually, the illustration wants to tell a complete tale of its own. I think the square format brings out the best in it, but I have nothing else to add - it's inspired and it's perfect!

Love the illustration Bella, but the story is priceless too!

~onguard...food for thought...making a mental note to self...never place pizza box in oven and leave!!! atleast you had the FIVE {my littles would have been to the moon by such} flavors of popcorn to make up for the mishap...so sorry but i do hope it was an evening enjoyed in the end...wonderful drawing...warm wishes and brightest blessings~

What a darling illustration of a really great story! So happy you were able to save your pizzas!!!
Love the flames jumping around the box! So perfectly Bella!

What a funny post! Smoked pizza... That's the flavor the restaurant industry has been awaiting. Run with it!

I love your illustration. The chicken critique reminded me of showing a drawing of a bird and being complimented on the monkey--oh well, a failure of SOMEONE'S vision..

Bella, Bella, bella! You are so funny! Never a dull moment at your place... or on your blog! Thanks for making me burst out in laughter! Your experiences coincide with the If theme very often. I hope this Friday’s theme is not accident, or broken or lost.... :o) Your illustrations are such a delight! I could make a whole room with just your work covering the walls. What a joyful room that would be!!Have a great week Bella and God bless!

Heh, ungrateful young fellow eh? Oh I was smiling from this even before I read thr story. The story made me salivate. It must have been the part about burning cardboard.

My speciality is Cehrnobyl Chicken. Receipe, one chicken, one barbecue on high. Leave for three hours... :0

It makes the chicken totally 'irepr', which, apart from being Celtic for 'grungy undy', by some strange coincidence, also happens to be my magic word :) My mot d'post as it were.

see youfromoz

Oh I loved the illustration by the way :) It made me feel all 'andalis' inside!

Your illustrations are always so lovely, love the inside of the pizza box, it's a tragedy about the pizza, but the story got pretty funny when somebody asked, "Why does the pizza taste like smoke?"

what a great story - that's something I'd definitely do :)and as always, this character is wonderfully done. your illustrations are so full of life!

k.h.whitaker said...

Wow, this cracks me up because I have been there. My favorite though is when my husband leaves something in the oven and then my son comes in and turns it on to 400 degrees to make a pizza and whatever it is goes up in smoke. Then the smoke alarm goes off and then the dogs begin to whine and bark. You'd think they'd learn, but it seems to happen repetitively. Love this illustration it is perfect for the prompt and the incident. Hugs Bella!

I still would have eaten the burnt pizza.

Mandy said...

That's great, both the story and the artwork!

Krista said...

HA!!! What a hoot! I love how you are so valiantly putting out the flames in full costume. So brave. Get 'em, get 'em! Off my pizza!

I once placed a hot pizza box on a friend's antique dresser and not only did it make a heat mark but the coated paper box stuck to it! (Not really "burning" but it did involve pizza and a similar kind of panic! :)

Amalia K said...

Well I'll be smoked!! Aren't you just a jolly little thing?? I see plenty of smiles and giggles coming off those comments, thanks to your amusing 'accident' and the fruit of your labor picking out the ashes... Although it's always a shame to see half a good pie lost in a fire, don't you think?

Big hug, oxx

Amalia K said...

And your piece of art? It's delicious, like a combination of hot smoked pizza and 'theboose' which is apparently what your blog has to offer me in trade for my comment!!!!!! (^_^)

Oh you are so funny Bella! The picture is just brilliant, as always!

I once went to a ladies evening at a good friend's house. She was making a poppy seed cake and took it out of the oven to check it. Then she dropped it on the floor. Then scooped it back into the tin to finish off!! It was a bit crunchy in places but tasted lovely. Imagine the recipe....bake cake, remove from oven, drop on floor.... etc.

A couple of years ago I was trying to get ahead of my cooking for Thanksgiving. Well, the girls decided that they needed homemade french fires. So being the good mother that I try to be, I made them some. Now just a few months ago, I had wallpapered my kitchen in a red gingham. As I put the fries in the pan, the grease began to boil over and then it caught on fire. By the end of the evening, not only did we have bad fries, but my whole wall at the back of the stove was charred. By Thanksgiving the next day, my kitchen smelled like a fire pit.
