Sweet Nothings

How to Whisper Sweet Nothings in Your Girlfriend's Ear
shamelessly copied from eHow.com

Things you'll need: Breath Mints, Girlfriend

1. Check your breath. There is nothing that will sour sweet nothings faster than bad breath.

2. Set the mood. You can whisper sweet nothings anytime, but knowing when to do it is important. Wait for a particularly intimate moment, like while watching a movie together or when you are stroking her hair.

3. Think about not only how the mood is striking you, but also how she feels. Knowing your girlfriend is important to finding the right words. Think about things like how beautiful she is when lying next to you, or how nice her smile is.

4. Try to put your feelings into words. Think about how to vocalize your feelings and emotions.

5. Lean in and whisper your declarations of love.

Tips and Warnings:
  • Get close to your partner when whispering. Sweet nothings are an intimate exchange between the two of you. Make sure what you say is for her ears only.
  • Don’t be overtly sexual. They are called sweet nothings, and not dirty talk, for a reason.
  • Don’t be overly poetic. This should be a vocalization of what you feel, not stolen prose.
  • Try not to be corny by using lines from old movies. Chances are she has heard them already.

P.S. A Tarzan yell does not count as a vocalization.

* * * * *

Thank you for your patience and kindness and understanding during my previous post. I didn't expect to be as affected as I was. I thought I had a good handle on things, but I was blindsided. Things are good, though. I've got my cogs spinning again. Thank you.

not an easy thing to deal with, bella, just glad you're able to find the strength to carry on, for your girls and yourself

great advice in your post on the 'sweet nothins', by the way...

Ces said...

If she is whispering sweet nothings then why is she a girl and not a boy whispering sweet nothings to a pink elephant, or is it a gay pink elephant or a girl elephant and they are friends, or can you whisper sweet nothings to just a regular friend? I think I have successfully confused myself. I am not confused however, when I say that this is beautiful and I adore this and may I just pretend that I am the elephant and you are whispering sweet nothings to me?

Tuko Tuko!

This is so sweetly romantic! Your advise tickles me : )

Deborah said...

Another brilliant piece, Bella. I am still laughing over Ces' comment. I would think that you will be blindsided quite a bit in the coming year. Do not be so hard on yourself. In fact, be gentle with yourself. All my love to you, Deb

Dear Bella
What do you use?
Someone once told me that when you're stoned, you see pink elephants flying;)
Okay, yours is standing with four feet on the ground.
Um, seriously now ....
Your beautiful drawing let me melt:)

ps. Everything takes time. It is not easy, but you are strong!

This latest illustration is so cute and your advice very fun! And Ces's comment the icing on the cake!!

You are one brave and inspiring woman, Bella, and a bright light in blog land! So glad we met!! Love, Silke

Bella ~ Absolutely NO reason you should be apologizing for feeling the way you do. I must say when I saw your post, I shed a tear too! When I have lost those I love (never as you have), the first year of firsts has always been the hardest. Prayers are still with you and your girls.

This drawing is adorable......maybe all our girls should stick with elephants and such instead of "boys". Hearts don't get broken that way. lol

Happy birthday to your love.

Love you Bella.

Besos.

cindy said...

the tips and warnings are the best part, especially nos. 2 & 4. it's not exactly relevant, but sometimes hallmark cards are so corny, we can't imagine actually saying the greetings out loud. glad your cogs are in motion. yay for you and us!

it's always better to feel, dearest bella. it's his first birthday in your new world...

Thinking of you Bella. Of course it hit you, it's bound to and I hope you did the right thing and let it. Love and hugs from Ireland.

Love the elephant and her/his whisperer! Ces is a lunatic!

I just adore every piece that you create. and how I wanted to send you a giant hug when I saw your last illustration. anyway, you are loved, from near and far.

i saw an elephant like that after a dose of stadol. four, to be precise. the nurses swore it wasn't a narcotic, but i am here to tell you that i saw them.

Manon Doyle said...

Love this Bella!! You're right about the breath mints... nothing would kill the mood more than bad breath.... yuk!

You're a strong woman Bella! I'm sending all my best vibes in this tough time!!

Peter Breese said...

Adorable! Real bummer about the Tarzan yell part... I always though that was my best vocalization ;).

Arija said...

Wish I could find a man who keeps sexual references out of any conversation let alone sweet nothings.
Delicious drawings...Ces needs an analyst, that girl works too hard.

So glad you made it through the night...

Love, hugs, whatever you need, just take it, there is more where it comes from.

Bella Sinclair said...

Thank you, Laughingwolf. Use your whispering skills wisely, my friend.

Ces, darling. Come closer. Closer. You are so adorable, do you know that? Would you like an Altoid? And by the way, how do you know that is not just a very secure boy elephant?

Hello, Lisa. Yes, sweet nothings, when whispered just right, tend to tickle the ear.

Ahh, Deborah, thank you. Now you can whisper in Ces's left ear while I whisper in her right.

Hello, Patricia! I'm high on life, my friend, high on life. Might I suggest an absorbant paper towel for the puddle you left?

Oh, Donn, hello! It's nice to see you again. I hope you are doing well, too. I will visit you very soon.

WOOHOOOO! Really? Wow, thank you, Diana! And thank you for the hugsssssss.

Silke, my yummy friend. Thank you for the shared tears. They say misery loves company, and I couldn't have asked for company more finer. I feel you hugs, too.

Caren, I couldn't agree more. An elephant will never break your heart, and he'll always remember your anniversaries. Thank you. I'll remember your words as more firsts head our way.

Love to you, too, dearest Renee.

Mucho gracias, Pepi. Besos.

Cindy, can you imagine your sweetie whispering a Hallmark card in your ear? HA! I'd like mine to rhyme, please. And none of those cards with that cranky old lady on the front, either. :)

Thank you, KJ. And his first birthday in his new world, too. I know he's in good company.

BT, I sure did let it in. The floodgates were opened. Ces is a lunatic of the very best variety!

Susie, thank you for your sweetness. Giant hugs are always welcome and always returned.

What, Aimee? Not a narcotic? Isn't it derived from opium? And FOUR doses? Criminy, those elephants shoulda been doing loop-de-loops in tutus!

Manon, do you prefer spearmint or peppermint? And thank you for the vibrations. Yes, Ces and Renee, that's right. I said vibrations. Get your minds out of the gutter.

Mr. Breese! Aaaaa-aa-aa-a-aaaaaaaaa!!! Whatever turns on the missus, that's what I say.

Hahaha, Arija. I guess the men in Australia are VERY virile! I was about to say "Down Under," but that would have garnered snickers from the peanut gallery.

laughingwolf said...

hmmm... need a wuff whisperer par excellence, bella? ;) lol

What a wonderful thing to do... to whisper sweet things. I have never thought about it before, I have to put in to practice. The Illu is so sweet, just how it has to be.
And... strenght again, I just can say: I always admire people who are not afraid of speaking (or drawing, or singing)about their feelings, good or bad, sad or whatever because there are a moment for each one, that´s life, isnt it?
Enormous hug!

Emily said...

Most sweet indeed Bella!
I love how the ear looks like a heart... emphasises the message beautifully!

Barbara said...

Another sweet drawing Bella.

Ces said...

Pssssst! Come closer... (Oh yeah I high-powered waterhosed every calcified whitish structure firmly protruding from my gum sockets with minty water and used a turbo tooth brush and I can taste my sweet breath) Ahhh-oh-hmnnn. Oh darling I love the smooth texture of your neck, Ooooh! I did not mean to startle you, I'll be gentle, Hmnnn. Do you like that? Easy, easy leave my elbows alone, aah! You did it. ACK! Oh it's hot in here!!!!

Ces said...

Oh crud!

You put me to shame! You go to my blog all solemn, thoughtful, eloquent and graceful.

I come here and behave so facetiously, irreverently and still shamelessly don’t give a damn.

Hehehehe! I can’t help it, I don’t want to.

However, thank you for that beautiful comment. It just changed my day fromm brooding to in-your-face-joyful!

Tuko! Tuko!

Bella Sinclair said...

Oh yes, Laughingwolf. Wuff away! a-woooooooo

Hi, Carolyn! I couldn't believe someone actually wrote a "How-To" for this. hahaha

Dear Willowsnest, how did you know I love big, chubby, sparkly hugs and asexual elephants? Thank you.

Oh, Linda. Thank you, sweetness. Tuko Tuko!

Aw, Caroline, thank you. Malaysian hugs are the warmest.

Thank you, ArtofPuro. Soft and full of love, like....marshmallows.

Monica, thank you. Hugs to you, too. :)

Encaracolada, then you must really admire country singers. They sing about ALL their sadness. :) Thank you, dear friend. Good whispering skills take practice.

Oh, Emily! The ear-heart! That was quite unintentional, at least on a conscious level. But now that you point it out, I cannot un-see it. It's like that arrow on the FedEx logo.....

Barbara, thank you.

Oh, dearest Ces. Are you ticklish....here? Hmmm? How about here? or here? Wooooo!

Oh yes, Eric! Whispering with a lipwort results in textured whispers. Verbal braille? Very seductive. :) Although...you might want to see a doctor to make sure it's not contagious. Don't want to end up with earwort.

Thank you, Sonia. You are right. Although some humans do have handles. :)

Happy Fall, Yoon See! I do have my own secret methods. ;) Thank you, my wonderful friend.

The Original Drama Mama said...

I had a lil elephant very much like this when I was young, and, original thinker that I am, named her Ellie.

Dear Bella, an apology is never needed, if we can share your grief and help you carry the pain just a bit of the way, just a little bit, let me say that celebrating each birthday in your heart and with your daughters will not go unnoticed, take heart in all that was, and all that has yet to be. Will it get easier? Hopefully. Will it ever be easy? No, I think not. But you have a courageous heart, and the strength to find reasons to celebrate and smile.
Your drawings give me reason to celebrate and make me smile, and I thank you :)

PS...someone, somewhere must have been very happy to come across this advice...I for one would like to add an extra tidbit...abstain from strenuous movement just prior to engaging in this activity...heavy breathing in the earlobe does not a tender moment make. ;)

Andrea said...

Hello Bella! What a day to get through, I can only imagine, and yes the first time for every wonderful holiday or birthday is the hardest.

I wish someone would whisper sweet nothings to my ear today and caress my knee. Instead I am bombarded by "do this, do that, fix this, build that. I wonder if Stadol really does make you see pink elephants? I know Versed just makes you unconscious. What is there to take that will make me ride pretty pink elephants and make my hair that beautiful without smelling like the town drunk and looking like Medussa? Even the word verification is so mental = "lobal".

Here's wishing for pretty pink elephants, light hearts and clear minds.

Renee said...

Thank you for everything you said about my father Bella. You are right, he was funny. So funny he would have you cracking up in minutes.

I love how you hold your hand and the thumb inside, I do the same. I like your reason for it though.

I find in the last couple of years I have not taken my hand out of that fist position with the thumb enclosed in the circle. It is like I am tensed up.

I am riding a big fat elephant and I am whispering sweet nothings to its ear but I forgot to check whether it is a girl or a boy. Must be a boy, he just burped and farted.

Debra Kay said...

I think the sweetest of sweet nothings are those that come unbidden-that just flow from the heart.

The pink elephant touches me on a personal level-one was my daughter's favorite childhood toy.

I also like that the much smaller girl is whispering to the larger creature-even big pink ele-phontasies need love too!

Tammie Lee said...

as far as I can tell, there is nothing to apologize for.

your art is so charming that might heart feels joy.

Good advice, Drama Mama! And if your man is breathing heavy, just check to make sure he has not fallen asleep. Thank you for those wonderful words.

Hello, Andrea. Thank you. Yes, aren't all these people fantastic? You, included. :)

Marie, thank you. Do you need to be wasted to see pink elephants? I hope not.

Oh, Serline! Happy birthday to little Narelle!

Thank you, Shirley. You are very sweet, yourself.

Nina, thank you. I'm okay, you're okay...

Hello, JCD. Did you find your elephant? And please don't feel you need to leave a comment. Admission is free. :)

Justdoodleit, sweet nothings will work on virtually any kind of animal. No elephants required.

Thank you, Lisa. That's quite a compliment, coming from you.

Francisco, thank you. Thanks for the hugs, too.

Acnestis, gracias. And that is a beautiful quote.

Thank you, Jack. God bless.

Oh yes, Owl Eng. She is blissful. Wonder what she is saying....

Janine, do you have many pachyderms where you are? If so, can I move in with you?

Hahaha, Renee, you crack me up! Gross. heeehee

Yummy, Ces! That sounds really delicious. But that is an extra step, and I am lazy. Pfft*burp* ooh, excuse me.

Thank you, my sweet Faruffa.

Ann Marie, thank you. Happy birthday to your loved one, too.

Debra, absolutely right you are! Even the big ones need some sugar every now and then.

Thank you, Tammie. I feel the same about your photos.

There's a softness to your work that I really admire. Your art always gives me a restful feeling. Always lovely!

Bella in our groups or talking with anyone, the ones leaving and the ones left behind it is the same.

It is the grief of knowing that we won't get to see our families and they grieve because they won't have us in their lives either.

We all enhance each other so much.

But yes, we will see our loved ones again, I'm counting on it.

I'm Number 77 this time! he he he! I meant to come by earlier, been under the weather a bit. Ces's comments have me spitting in laughter all over the screen. Geeish man this is awesome. I would like to whisper sweet nothing in this elephants ear too. How absolutely wonderful is she or he! It's really a very moving and sweet illustration. It's beautiful my friend.
Oh my sweet Bella, darling there is nothing to be sorry for. It's still all fresh and new. You don't spend your life with someone you love and share a house and children and then wake up one day and things have changed forever and it not affect you. Hurts you to your very soul. Give yourself all the time you need and you do need time. I don't know that time heals all wounds, but each day, if we live, and give ourselves permission , we can get better. Truly I don't know what's worse, someone being taken quickly or linger on and on. I've had it both ways and all I can say is that it hurts either way. Kinda like ripping that stinkin' bandage off of a third degree burn. When it comes to mind we hurt and cry. I pray that you will have the healing that you and the girls need in this time. Go with your feelings baby girl. Cry when you need to and want too. It's okay. Just know that you have friends and family the love you so much and will come out to Cally if we need to just so you can have shoulders to cry on! Maybe we need to do that???? I love you so much and I know it don't take the pain and hurt away, but I really do love you Bella

Hey Sweetie, Here is a little song that I wrote many years ago. I use to sing it at weddings, but it reminded me so much of you and hubby and the girls and it's something that only you can understand.
Here goes,

The nights I cried,
You dried my eyes
Nobody knew but you

The nights I prayed
to break of day
nobody knew but you

My broken heart all torn apart
nobody knew but you

and in my loney hour
you'd send
your precious powerful love
to recuse me
there is no other
that I've discovered
quite like you
quite like you

It comes to me
as no surprise
someone as kind as you

You lift me up
when I am down
nobody could
like you
the love I feel for you
is oh so real
I love you babe
it's true

and in my lonely hour
you'd send
your precious powerful
love to recuse me

There is no other that I've

I have been singing this song today. I am cookin' Baby!

My baby whispers in my ear
Mm, Mm, sweet nothings
He knows the things I like to hear
Mm, Mm, sweet nothings

Things he wouldn't tell nobody else
Secrets, baby
I keep them to myself
Sweet nothings Mm, Mm sweet nothings

We walk along hand in hand
Mm, Mm, sweet nothings
Yeah, we both understand
Mm, Mm, sweet nothings
Sittin' in class or trying to read my book
My baby, give me that special look
Sweet nothings Mm, Mm, sweet nothings

I'm sitting on my front porch
Mm, Mm sweet nothings
Well, do I love you? Of course
Mm, Mm, sweet nothings
Mama turned on the front porch light
And said "Come in darling
That's enough for tonight"
Sweet nothings
Mm, Mm, sweet nothings
Sweet nothings
Mm, Mm, sweet nothings
Sweet nothings

Aaaahhhh! I love that. I love that you added that video! Oh yes! Yes! Cooking baby. OMG! I can hardly lift this pan. It's as heavy as a 19-pound turkey. It is 4 1/2 inches deep. I wish you, your epsilons and Ma and Pa are here.

Glad to see your name out there in the blogosphere again. A very sweet illustration.
Art is healing, but in order to heal we have to go back sometimes. And while the pain will eventually dull, you will never forget--and who would want to?
