IF - Fleeting

Blowing prayers to the wind

The sakura, or cherry blossoms, are fleeting. They last only a couple of weeks before floating off the trees. With each gust of wind, pale pink petals take flight like a thousand butterflies.

Before the cherry blossom season completely fades away, I went to Shinjuku Garden to enjoy their splendor. Come take a walk with me.

Holy cow these are gorgeous! I've never seen Cherry Blossoms up close until now. I was thinking of creating a piece using them too. I *was* going to plow through the internet looking for reference pics but it looks like I need not look any further ;)

Beautiful IF piece as well, Bella. I love your 'oranges on toothpick' characters :)

I'm sorry if you've covered this previously but what's your process?

Ces said...

Oh that illustration is beautiful in every way. The technique, the emotions and the sentiment it creates within. I love the touch of pink. What a beautiful creation.

The garden is beautiful. I read about it after you told me and it was very interesting. Someday your daughters will be adults and one or both of them will say and write: my Mother is a beautiful woman who creates beautiful art. Her hand is gentle in every way, creating curves and lines with meticulous care which she shares with the world and which delights strangers who unabashedly write her how much they love her, but I have something else, I have been cared for by those hands, and every touch is sprinkled with love.

Someday they will realize who their Mother is.

Bella Sinclair said...

Thank you, Nancy. :)

And thank you, too, Brian. Glad to be of service. I tried to restrain the head size in this one, so she's more of a golfball on a toothpick. My process? Sit like a rotting log until inspiration strikes, get deliriously tired, trade raunchy comments with good bloggy friends, and then lose all concentration and pass out. No, seriously, no process. Light sketch, erase, draw, erase, draw, scan and add color in Illustrator. Voila.

Oh, Ces. You've let the cat out of the bag. They were adopted, and you are their true mother.

Bella Sinclair said...

Truly, Ces, that was very sweet. Thank you. I hope they graduate college and write that well.

Ces said...

Ah! We share the same hope with our epsilons, plus I hope I never have to bail any of mine, except for political dissent.

Becky said...

These are gorgeous. We have them here in the States.Your right they dont last long but the beauty of them lingers in photos taken.Oh boy they also smell so good as well.

I enjoyed the blossom today in my garden.
Thank for the nice walk!
And again I love youre illustration

So beautiful!!! Thanks for the photos! I looks like a beautiful place to visit. :)

Bella what a simply gorgeous illustration - so delicate! And the walk through the park was delightful - thank you for sharing that with us! I like the description of your process - I can definitely relate to that 'sit like rotting log' phase! I have spent many hours like that with the IF word and/or its meaning reverberating in my head till I almost can't stand it any longer - what a relief it is when inspiration strikes!

As always, adore your drawing. Your photos are beautiful. We "met" a group from Japan at the dance festival we have been attending. Actually, daughter Ashley was teaching them tap. Such delightful children - didn't speak an ounce of English, but seem to communicate beautifully.

Wonderful drawing! That pink really stands out! It's one of my goals in life to travel to Japan during the time of the cherry blossoms! Thanks for sharing the pics!

Roberta said...

So lovely Bella! I would love to see them in person....
Happy Easter!

Happy Easter;)

Valerie Lorimer said...

Oh, so beautiful Bella! Love your piece and thanks for sharing the photos. What a gorgeous place.

the pink is perfect, bella. it's so easy to see and feel the gentle wind carrying the petals away. this is a total treat to look at and step into.

Bella- Thank you for that walk down the park. I've always wanted to see cherry blossoms in person, and you've brought me just a little closer with your pics.
Wonderful drawing as always! I love the touch of color it really adds to the fleeting moment

Hi Bella,

I love your "If- Fleeting" picture ~ so sweet and delicate.
You really do need to enjoy the blossom when they are about, because with the wind they soon fly away.

Thank you for taking us on a tour of those wonderful gardens.

Happy Easter
Hugs
Carolyn

So pretty. I especially like the little fishies by the bridge.

I don't suppose you'd trade some of my skunk cabbage for a few sakura? How about if I throw in a couple of frogs. The peeping ones?

Dusik said...

Bella! this is one of the most beautiful drawings i saw recently! thank you!

happy Easter! :)

BT said...

Such a lovely drawing of the bridge and 'blowing prayers to the wind' how wonderful. I love the colour too. The cherry trees are gorgeous and the walk round the garden magical. We do have cherry trees here in ireland but ours are quite small at the moment. In the Uk we have a large one and the blossom falls like confetti all over the back yard.

laughingwolf said...

ab fab, thx bella :)

oooh bella this is so pretty... i can feel the breeze. you are outstanding at creating movement within your drawings.

your photos are beautiful too! although, ces's little message to you is so true and might be just as beautiful. u both are such perfect friends for each other. i love u both!

Ces said...

AAAAAAAAHHHHHHH! I am definitely dreaming!!! I dreamt that I saw a drawing with grey trees and then I went to sleep with this visual image and my sleep gave me rest and then it changed the drawing. OMG. This is beautiful. I am really envious now. Everything you do is perfect. You don't make mistakes. This is beautiful but why should I be surprised? Everthting you create is beautiful. You are beautiful and I love you. OUCH. OUCH!!!! It hurts to paint myself. I am not dreaming. But what happened to the video. There was a video here where the Hues Corporation sang Rock The Boat and there was disco dancing and where is Gloria Gaynor singing Once I was afraid, I was petrified then I blew cherry blossom petals into the wind and I an't never been the same...I was too slow. I just now realized the keyhole doors, we have old keyhole doors here, the onees that can let objects with wide middles and big behinds...

Ces said...

I did not paint myself. I pinched myself. Ouch! Punctuate!!!I am discombooboolating...

Ces said...

The fish! There are fish in the water!!! And the water is blue. You are playing tricks on my brain. Does she ever wear pants? Does she always wear a dress?

I managed to catch this illustration a little earlier when it was the foggier scene, and have to say I love it both ways. Your flower girls series is really wonderful as well.

Carol Lawecki said...

Hi Bella, You have completely captured the moment in your drawing. All the emotion and beautiful scenery down to the little fish and little Japanese structure. I am totally in awe of your gift!

Bella Sinclair said...

Hi, Becky! Yes, they do smell wonderful, don't they. They sell sakura ice cream here, but I don't know what it tastes like.

Hello, Patricia. So wonderful that you have flowers in your garden!

My sweet TattingChic. I hope you make it out here one day. And sorry about the mess up before. Yes, I knew you took it in good stride, but I still felt awful about it. :)

Hahaha, Caroline. :) Sometimes I sit so long, I think I grow fungus.

Deepazartz, welcome! I look forward to visiting your world.

Caren, how adorable! Little Japanese children. I just want to squeeze each one.

Hello, Esque! Well, little by little, you're getting closer to this part of the world. :)

Hi, Roberta! Happy Easter to you, too!

Aww, thank you Amy and Valerie. So very sweet of you to say.

Thank, KJ. Stay as long as you want. :)

Thank you, Isay!

Edrian! Take a trip up to D.C. someday!

Hello, Carolyn. As much as I love when they are blooming, I also love watching them fly away.

Hahaha, Voz! If you glue little pointy ears on the peepers, it's a deal!

Goodness, Dusik! What horrible things have you been looking at recently? It's all relative.

Oh, BT! Can't wait until your trees grow big. When the petals fall, it looks like snow, doesn't it?

Ha, Laughingwolf. I wish I had fab abs.

Linda, my dear, you do know how much we love you, too, don't you?

HanamiGallery! Wow, how appropriate and auspicious for you to visit! はい, きれい です!

Eric, thank you. Yes, the sun seems to have come out and burned away that grey fog.

Carol, you are much too sweet. Thank you!

And dear Ces, you were not imagining things. But you truly are delirious. No more talk about upside down keyholes and pounds. It's bad for the smileline.

Good morning,
The brand name of my pigment ink pens is Sakura.
Ces

P.S. So if I get illustrator, do you think I can color my drawings? I wonder what they would look like? I thought you drew directly on Illustrator. Is that Adobe Illustrator?

Bella Sinclair said...

Oh, Kaili, you deserve many awards!

Happy Easter, Isay!

Good morning, Ces, and Happy Easter. Yes, Adobe Illustrator. Being a painter, though, you might want Photoshop instead. Illustrator is good for vector drawings, but Photoshop lets you work closer to painting. At least, that's my impression. Digitally coloring is wonderful and fun, and no damage to the b/w original. As for the Korean, I can read it more or less, but I don't know what the heck I'm saying.

Ces said...

Oh I forgot. Sorry.

Happy Easter to you too!

Excuse me but, you are too technical for me. What is a vector drawing? Is it the same as vector - carrier of disease?, or your drawing is more so like the source or origin or is it a different way of pronouncing you old boyfriend's name Victor?

Bella Sinclair said...

Yeah, that's how I used to pronounce my old boyfriend's name. I used to pretend I was from Eastern Europe. He may also have been a carrier of a disease.

Let me restate: Illustrator is probably better for graphic design, Photoshop better for digital painting. Please, someone correct me if I'm wrong.

Ces said...

Thank you for the explanantion, professor. :)

P.S. Oh you have such an exotic life.

kj said...

bella, i tried to remember the first, middle and final of this illustration. incredible. there is a perfection (eg final inch) in your work that simplifies and magnifies its innocence. whew--that is a heady statement but do you know what i mean?).

my favorite is still the shadow, and this time that includes the reflection. do you ever write commentary? these drawings belong on coffee tables from japan to maine. really.
:)

Ces said...

This must be the new way of posting in the blogs huh? Is this a sort of test, Oh Mental Ninja? Let's see "Spot The Changes" which is perfect for Sunday as Spot The Changes is on the Sunday paper; or this may be a neurodiagnostic test to determine if I have early signs of Alzheimer's Disease; or is this to determine if I have organic brain syndrome from too much sleeplessness and getting fixated on whether the image in someone-special's blog has changed?

Next Bella Sinclair is going to draw the trio of Hues Corporation on the bridge singing "Rock The Boat" with the kiss-blowing-woman or maybe she is going to draw a crown on the woman... or maybe the woman will start singing "Once I was afraid, I was petrified..."

The word verification is "sequili" which is almost a homonym for "sequelae" and your post is exactly a sequela of the original vector drawing of black an grey and now has come to this.

So in conclusion, this was an artistic expedition with the intention of ruling out whether your blog sister will have a brain fart.

messyfish said...

I see 48 comments, and think no point leaving a comment, you will probably never get around to reading it, but heck....I will anyway. I LOVE this, and the photos of the bridge and cherry blossom. I have always wanted to walk over one of those, ever since my japanese pen friend from my childhood sent me a postcard of one!

Hello, Soulbrush! I only explored a small portion of that garden, and it was magnificent!

Thank you, Detlef.

Ria, so sweet of you to say so. Thank you!

Deepazarts, I enjoyed our walk. And it was nice to have you walk with me here as well. I'll be seeing more of you.

KJ, my, that WAS heady. Thank you. I've tried scribbling on people's coffee tables before, but they don't seem to appreciate it very much.

Hello, Messyfish! Maybe you'll be able to install a curved bridge in your new country home, whaddaya think? As for the comments, look closely. Half of them are from Ces. :)

ArtSparker, thank you. That's a lotta water to blow out of, too. :)

Nicky, hello! Yes, so many beautiful sights here. I am lucky.

Ces! I've had to purchase a few of those tribal neck rings to support myself. Goodness, people will think I have hydrocephalus. WHO, now, is a mental ninja? And how can you chide me on pulling a little switcharoo when it is YOU who is the master of change. You change your blog header, avatar, name, sidebar, and posts...how often? Sometimes several times in one day. Frankly, I'm surprised you've managed to keep with the same red lipstick and husband all these years! HA!

Bella, absolutely beautiful. I keep increasing the size of it to look at. Oh my God it is beautiful. The real thing does not even compare.

It also reminded me of the cherry blossoms you sent to me on the wind with wishes.

Gorgeous.

I love your daughter and she was right, Jesus was a hippie.

I went to Catholic school too. And my answer to your beautiful girl would have been 'Yes God created everything and evolution was one of them.' As she gets older she will figure it out with lots and lots of help from Mom and Dad.

To me it is kind of like one of those questions 'where do babies come from' answer 'mommies tummy'. I am a big believer in age appropriate. They don't want to hear our song and dance.

All of your hopes came true and I am holding my stomach from too much stuffing.

I love that award from Ces -- the phenomenal woman because of her Mom. To me that is where it has all the meaning.

Cheers darling Bella.

Aimee, thank you so much. I hope you had a marvelous weekend. I wish you could have been at the garden with me for real. But they have no coffee shops in there.

Owl Eng and Doodlegirl, wow, thank you! So kind, both of you.

Bata, I'm afraid if I put the trio on the bridge, the extra bouncy man will make it collapse. Would you believe me if I said the woman on the bridge is Gloria Gaynor?

Bella Sinclair said...

Lizzy, I'm so sorry. I did not mean to bypass you. Thank you so much for your sweet comment.

When I saw this week's topic, I wished you'd come up with sakura. And you did!:) I was very frustrated when I came to Japan and learned that I wouldn't be able to witness it. I would have gathered as much petals with my mouth coz it looks like cotton candy to me.

I'm sure you enjoyed the experience, I can tell by just looking at your wonderful illustration. But I don't know, she looks lonely and yearning for company. Don't worry, I have a surprise for you next week.;)

Bella just so you know I copied this picture and I look at it almost everyday. It has the ability to make me feel at peace.

Bella thank you for your comment on my blog yesterday. I know you know how that makes me feel.

If we are physically manifesting the void, well then all the overeating I do has nothing to do with my size. I always knew it wasn't my fault, that must be why the last time I cared I was probably 30.

Wasn't that so beautiful what Ces said. I think of my childhood friend who lost both her children and that there are just giant holes remaining that will never be filled.

Motherless at 11, poor boy. I would imagine the older sisters played mothering roles? Or probably only one of them did.

I like the strong tree with them beside me.

Are you getting ready for the move? Will you have trunks and trunks of things to bring back?

Renee said...

Hey Bella, I am absolutely fine, just a little bit of some yucky on my skin. But all better now. Will go back to the hospital tomorrow and they will check it out again. But it is totally fine.

Must admit though kind of in a shitty mood. Just want my results and for them to be fine.

Bella have you got the house picked out that you are moving too. When you said furnished place that is what I'm assuming. Do you do it over the internet.

Are the girls excited and your husband and you to be coming back to North America.

love you sweet Bella.

Renee said...

Bella I love that it was your home so that it will have the things that you love in it.

I just saw that Susan tonight and I wanted her to do well even though I already knew that she did. Just seeing people making those faces, I was like fuck off.

And then she sang and it was beautiful.

I hate when people are written off for no reason.

Love Renee xoxo

Renee said...

Bella I think the acid reflex medicine is really an alias for something far more sinister.

Ces was talking about size on her blog and I know she only meant one thing. No matter what she is trying to play at now.

Ever since she was stolen by Bata Batatuo she has been making funny remarks. I fear that something may have been pushed in her mouth against her will. And now, she just dreams of size.

I know Bella that you are too young to hear all of this horrible stuff from Ces.

We need an intervention.

Ces I think Bella said it was a pot, a very spacious pot. I don't even know whether two hotdogs will satisfy the pot and make it come to a boil properly.

Okay now I am getting ridiculous.

Seems like I need to boil some hotdogs tonight to release some steam from the pot.

Bella I really don't think that I could cook more than one hot dog at a time. Because the bun is very very tiny. har har har. You would almost think it has never cooked a hotdog before.

I forgot should I supply the bun as well as the pot. What do you think. I know you are so much younger but I think you may have more ideas about all the condiments and such.

And I laughed and laughed at your 'Of for pete sake' kind of statement to Ces about cooking those hotdogs in a bag. har ha ha.

You are the best. Truly. Thanks for making me laugh.

Notice how my ego is so huge I think it is all about me.

Nadalene and I were rolling on the floor the other day because she says I am excellent for bringing any topic back to myself.

As in 'wow the grasshoppers are really green' and I say 'yeah I know, if my eyes weren't so blue they might be green.'

Okay now I am rambling.

Love Renee xoxo

Texan hot dogs are the best. They really know how to make the coals hot down here.
