Oh boy. I never thought this would see the light of day. This is an old drawing I did back in -- whooooosh -- high school art class. It was one of those exercises where you take a photograph and draw a grid on it, and then copy each box of the grid onto another piece of paper. I managed to copy the man's hand and face, but when I got to his hair, I just couldn't do it. So I subtracted it from the equation by chopping off the top of his head. Thwack!

Mighty fine effort, have to say that I try and compose drawings with various elements placed strategically so if I stuff one up then I've still got a passable, albeit, smaller drawing.
it's pretty amazin' with the contrast. It's nice to have something from high school that you can still have some pride in.
This is awesome Bella! And you drew this when you were still in high school? I knew it when I saw your sketch of Korean folks that you can draw better portraits than I. Here's one of the sketches I did during high school. Back then, I thought I really had his likeness.haha
By the way, isn't this Albert Einstein?:P
I really like your interpretation of the word and your style.
Almost everyone I know still think of themselves as teenager, whether they are 16 or 70...
*bows and grovels at your feet*
Bella-sama I am not worthy of your presence! You are truly made of awesome.
Bella, this is pure wonderful contrast! Great work!
This is a great work Bella. Wow! Some more drawing during high school. I really admire all your artworks, the cute and the realistic ones. All are great!
By the way, I only took art when I was in junior secondary from 1 to 3; which was 13 to 15.
Then, senior secondary form 4 & 5 in science stream, didn't get to attend any art classes.
You were so lucky to have the Art class. What a unforgetable memories Bella:)
its a really incredible drawing and I love that you chopped his head off!
Its really fun to go through the old school drawings - I wish I had kept some more!
Very nice pre-WWI work Bella! He he.. the way you write about how long ago this was, well, you knew I would have to have fun with that :). Very cool stuff as always!
Looks a little like a young Robert Crumb (only fatter). Nice drawing
Wow...that is impressive! Hairless and all. LOL
I also love the spring cleaning one below...Hilarious!!!! :)
Hair and the top of your head is overrated! So talented you are/were/are!
You must have lots and loads of beautiful artworks since way back then until now.,,,,
great!
Wow, thank you, everyone. Milkberry, please get up. I think this is about the only thing I have left from high school. Really, though, I'm just a walking xerox machine. It's the creating-from-nothing that I'm trying to work on.
Tiddly Inks, Caren, you're absolutely right. Hair is overrated. :)
And Peter, if you can imagine, I did this all by candlelight because, as you know, we didn't have electricity back when I was a kid. :D
Gosh, Isay, I wish I had loads of stuff. But I stopped drawing in college and started up again last year, so there's quite a big gap.
Wow! This an amazing drawing, Bella. I'm so glad you pulled it out again for us to see. It's awesome.
Wow, Bella - what a great drawing from way back when! So glad you decided to take it up again!
bella, i'm not an artist, i'm a writer, and i cannot imagine how you "copied" these grids so expertly. i would swear it's a photograph.
seeing this i had the same feeling i experienced when i finally got to see valgal's incredible drawings in person: i imagine your "portfolio" would be equally incredible. my favorite of everything you do: those little feet. and then your shadows...
:)
what a talent you had even so young, whew. hugs to you bs.
Funny, you could put his comparmentalized thoughts into the grid boxes.Looks like Sartre to me, except his eyes aren't sufficiently unmoored.
Yes, he does look like a philosopher - it's that distant gaze, I think, and the thoughtful way he draws on his cigarette. Fantastic illustration, Bella, beautifully rendered.
Holy carrot! What a great drawing! I love the guy's pose with the cig there between his fingers. Totally awesome. I bow before ye.
Really fine work Bella! I like the darkness all around him and his finfers and squinting eyes, amazing!
Holy cow, you could draw this well in high school? This is really awesome stuff.
Wow, this is really nice especially for a high school student.
whaaaat? this is a drawing? i thought this was a photograph the moment i saw it (with a crease or fold where the 'subtracted' part was). and you did this in high school! WOW!
Thanks for your kind words Bella. Mighty fine drawing skills you have there! To pull that off at high school is very impressive!
talent will out, and you have it in spades, bella :)
bella, i can't get over this! high school??? wow! outstanding work!!!!
btw i sent u an email.
xoxolin
holy smokes Bella!
all i can say is "wow" and "great!"
high school? amazing
Bella this is totally outstanding. You are brilliant. Did the neighbours know it was you who coloured in all the circles. Better yet, do the girls know it was you. Obviously your husband knows or does he.
Love you. Renee xooxo
It's excellent Bella! I would have been intimidated if I had seen that in a high school art class!- Take care- John
That is wonderful Bella and what a talented young school girl you were!
Wishing you the most fabulous weekend
Hugs
Carolyn
Are you for real? High school? I thought it was a photograph of one pf your boyfriends, the one you did not marry because he was a smoker. I am home now. Just got off the phone with tech services because we had no internet. Argh!
This is a amazing Bella, and such a surprise from your other cutsie artworks that Ive seen. What an artist you are!
amazingly beautiful!! you're very a gifted artist!!
I'm overwhelmed with flattery. Thank you so much! To be honest, I was hesitant to even share this.
Yes, high school. I wasn't allowed to date, so what was a girl to do. And I developed a crush on my art teacher as a result. :)
Renee, no one, not even my family knows the mystery of the colored circles. It's just between you and me. Shhhhhhh.
Ces! Yay, you're back! Let's get this party started. Oh, yes, this was an old boyfriend, and I was madly in love with him. But alas, I do not smoke, and he told me my kisses were flavorless, so he left me. I never got over it.
Aaah, Kaili. I have a dark side. mwahahaha
From the look in his eyes, I'd say he knows his days as a fine work of art are numbered. He looks like he's trying to smoke that cigarette as fast as he can before the rest of his head dissolves into little sketchy boxes.
bella!! ...your kisses were flavorless so he left u..haahaha yr killn' me..haha
oh, wow i'm truly impressed! i can't believe you did this when you were in high school, you're so talented!
Hi Bella! Wow, you were already seriously good in high school...
WOW! Bella, you are one amazing artist! You never cease to amaze me! :)
Thanks for visit my blog and your words
:) nice week
this is a drawing? you're kidding me!! i thought it's a photograph.. wow!
wow.. what a wonderful work!It looks like a photograph.Awesome!
Lovely pencil drawing... glad it had a chance to live again. I'm sure I've seen the face before... doesn't look happy about having his head unfinished ;)
I remember these type of exercises...but I never did this well! plus..hehe... who hasn't choped the hair (weird hand, foot hard to draw fold) off... at some time. :)
beautiful work!
(I am going to Tokyo on friday any must see tips?)
I remember seeing this guy at Narita Airport. He did look funny. Part of his head was chopped off...
I had to do a double take when I came here this time. First I thought I was at the wrong Doodlespot, but then I realized that it was your work. Well, you are way too modest. There's a lot if talent in those hands! You just keep on drawing, because your work realistic or not it's superb!
i had to come back and make it an even fifty. are you SURE that isn't a photograph?
bella, i beg you to put up a new post, because every time i check in and see this guy, it reminds me of a date from hell...
:)
I'm totally impressed you did this in HS! It's terrific even without the hair...maybe he went bald soon there after. I have a grid drawing from HS< that is mostly subtraction!
You guys are all so amazingly sweet and kind. Thank you so much.
Hahaha, when I chopped off the top of his head, I guess I was having a Kill Bill kind of moment. Uma Thurman who??? By the way, Uma means horse in Japanese.
Thwack thwack
Very impressive that you did this in high school Bella!
So much talent you have!!
Holy cow I thought it was a photograph...sheesh girl, guess you scored an "A" on this assignment, even if you DID whack his noggin off!
Excellent work I hope you got an A even without the top of the head.
Beautiful work and a cunning manouevre!
WOW! Looks like an old photograph - amazing
Wonderful and brillant ejecution!
His substract hair makes this artwork different and special.
Great Bella, great!
Great job! Your story reminds me of an old drawing joke..."When in doubt - crop it out". Lol!
High school???? Holy cow, Bella! You were this awesome back then, huh?
I think if I attempted this back in high school I would be saying something like ' So I started the tie and... I couldn't go any further!'
Awesome illo,at first site I thought it was a photo, like it even without hair
That is seriously awesome!!! You are so amazing! I totally remember doing this assignment in high school, and mine didn't turn out nearly as good as this...
he could be Geoffrey Rush from Shine couldn't he? :) nice work! so soft and delicate!
Wow, this is awesome... and what a great way to solve your hair problem, hee hee! I can't help thinking that guy looks so familiar.
An amazing drawing in any case and I think chopping off the top makes it even more intense; you really are 'in his face'!
bella, another way to leave you the same message: count me in.
xo
Hi sweetheart. I also wanted you to see the comment I left about you on Manon's blog, but on her post for yesterday, not today.
You guys are so cute. Festivities = adorable.
Yes, you could be right. Just like I use to think Axel Rose was hot but really I was getting the music mixed up with the musician because I love Guns and Roses music.
Oh well, this is my last day of being 52. 53 tomorrow and when I was diagnosed at 49 and they said that I had about 6 months. Well, all I can say is I am thrilled to turn 53.
xoxoxo
Love Renee
Bella do you ever draw like this anymore?
He looks like a photograph. His hands, everything. This is super fantastic. And you were in high school. To me it is some of the best I have seen anywhere.
Love Renee xoxo
I adore your art now. That is why I first came to your blog and I have been in love ever since.
It was for the art at first, but then I would see little sentences from a very witty woman.
And then I fell in love with neither the art nor the sentences, but with the very witty woman.
It is just that this is so different but equally brilliant.
You totally rock it hard.
By the way, if you see kj's blog today, I think we are flying over there in that dragon from fantasy friday that you are a bit weary of.
Love Renee.
p.s. We should see if Ces and Bjornik and Linda want to come too. Do you have lots of room for us over there.
I'm calling first dibs on a bed (because I sometimes think I am the Queen of Sheba).
xoxo
bella, i really love the way renee described first discovering u. it was that same way for me. first i fell in love with the little girl with the precious lttle hands and feet. then is was the sweet chick with THEE BEST sense of humor.. i just love it bella.
btw don't u feel so special being friends with a real super hero. RENEE is a true super hero!!! i am so proud to call her my friend.
Buns of steel, is that a type of bread in Japan.
I am the woman with the body like the Venus of Willendorf.
Thanks for giving me the bed.
xoxox
Bellaaa! Where is my pencil! I can't find my pencil, I need to sketch a peacock!
just so you know, bella, i think the dragon is an ostrich. and i'm not sure who'll be at the wheel...
:)
This portrait is incredible, Bella! That's funny (and ingenious) about substracting the rest of his head :)
