IF - Resolve

Once upon a time, not too long ago, in a suburban primary school in Japan, little children prepared to perform a production of Snow White and the Seven Dwarves.

The parents, however, protested that it wasn't fair to have only one Snow White. And so, after a bout of parental bullying, the school relented and put on a production of 21 Snow Whites and No Dwarves. Issue resolved.

I kid you not.

Japanese parents used to respectfully defer to the school and teachers. But in the past decade, it seems, they have become more aggressive and demanding. Some say it's a symptom of the economic downturn. Perhaps it's because many families only have one child (it being too expensive to have more), so they want the best for him or her. Whatever the cause, I thought this story was hysterical when I read it. (You can read more about it here.)

Good golly. What on earth do you think the storyline was?

That is WILD! I can't believe it. Well, I guess the way you explain it then I can, but still. What a whacked out play! LOL! I'm in shock, LOL!

i am laughing so hard i can hardly type! and i love how some of your snow whites look as if they're not sure exactly what they should be doing, since, you know, there are 20 others to fill the same role.

and when are you going to start illustrating children's books??? enough already!

Was it a real story?! :))

Thank you. I love sharing this story, 'cause it's just so out there. And YES, it's TRUE!

Aimee, you write the book -- say, about Birdie and Boo -- and I'll toss in a few illustrations!

My Dearest Bella,

This illustrations are so darling. The story is hilarious. I doubt if it is caused by the economic downtourn but rather the westernization (more Americanization) of Japan. Political correctness must have reached the country of "self-sacrifice" where once people were prepared to commit suicide for the greater good, they not have realized that self-satisfaction, equal results and "everyone is a winner" is much better than being altruistic. I can't believe that the parents bullied the school but there you go. I have to read the entire story.

As ugly as the story sounds, you rendered it enough cuteness that I love this entire post. Bella, you are fantastic. Sometimes I wonder how I could collaborate with you. I really do.

Ces said...

I meant "they now have realized that self-satisfaction,"

21 Beautiful Snow whites' illustration. Very interesting!!!
Thanks for sharing this story. It's very funny but the parents reaction are kind of weird but noble...Ha...Ha...
I just wonder how long you have spent to resolve this beautiful piece. Each little snow white here got their own character. You must have spent a lot of time getting them out. Loving all them...just too good to comprehend!!!

Bye!

what a laugh!!But is a real reason to worry actually...what will became those kids later,if ''snow white''was such a surce of problems...he,he,he:)))I like the 21 collection...what about making it an illustrated-story?I think would be fun, moral, realistic and surealistic in the same time, for both children and parents:a true Modern Snow White:))!Have a nice week Bella and thanks for this incredible ''adventures''
