When it rains, the girls at the elementary school build a house out of their umbrellas. How I wish I was tiny again so I could crouch in there with them. Then one of the mothers chided them, saying something like, "yadda...yadda...yadda...lose an eye!" So they don't do it anymore. Pity.

Yes, I remember doing this when I was a little girl. We also did it under the hot sun since we had parasols. This is a gorgeous piece Bella. The colors are fantastic. You know, I was thinking, we should publish a book about our art and why we blog about our art. We should have an Illustration Friday contributors get together for a weekend.
this is just beautiful! your little girl pictures just put me over the moon; you draw so well whether you're working in black and white or full color.
shame on that umbrella spoiler!
Ces, a book -- WHAT A GREAT IDEA! And wouldn't an Illustration Friday convention be something? I'd love to attend one.
Thank you, Aimee. I'm trying to keep up with your prolific creativity. I think it's your new avatar. She's keeping me inspired. :)
What a cute image! Bella you deserve every warm and welcoming comment there is because you are so sweet when you visit other people's blogs and your cute illustrations show so much of your personality! Thanks for all you do to brighten people's days...I'm one of those people whose days have been brightened by you!
Oh no, TattingChic. I am but the moon, reflecting the beautiful light that is yours. Sappy, but true. ;)
Absolutely beautiful! I love this image, so touching ^-^! As a mum of a daughter this captures all that is wonderful about the experience.
Bella, you are so humble & kind!
This time, I feel so touched that you specially drew a picture to thank us. And this cute & colouful illustration just fits in your thank you note to us.
Yeah, with an umbrella as you & your kids shelter.
Bella, in return I would like thank you for your shelter too, very obvious your continual support & inspiration have continue to make me go extra miles!
Thanks, I can picture your smile in my thoughts!
Have a great weekend Bella!
Thank you, Holly! So nice to see you again.
Yoon See, you are the unquestionable Queen of Kind. You leave such incredibly warm and inspiring messages for so many people. Like the Johnny Appleseed of love here in blogland. Have a wonderful weekend, too!
That mom (the spoiler) is what I call a rainy day person. Ironic, huh?
Wonderful, uplifting illo! Are you back in the states yet? Arizona will be so happy to have you back ;)
I loved this post so much that I blogged about it. This was my first time actually visiting your blog, but I love what I've seen. Good luck!
Hello, Lolo! Yeah, she sure rained on their parade. HA! We're not back in the states yet. Still ironing out the exit details....
Welcome, Retinna! Wow, I'm very flattered and honored. I will hop on over to your place. :)
beautiful umbrellas! i like umbrellas, too esp. when they\re as coloful at these ones.
Hi, Isay! Mmmmm, I agree. Umbrellas can be so fun, especially the ones for kids. Some of the nice ones (for adults) can get really expensive here in Tokyo. Yikes!
Awww, what a nice image and thought.
Pity about the moms being moms and not letting kids be kids though. It is what most of the moms around here would say...if they let them out in the rain in the first place! LOL
what a wonderful piece,Bella!!Start to remember pieces of my childhood ''build a palace'' games we use to play!Very, very toucheing!
Oh Bella you make me want to go out and purchase all kinds of boots and rain coats and of course umbrella's This is just sooooo cute and girly. It has everything that I love! Great illustration!
Thanks, Christy! I hear ya. I got dirty looks from moms when their daughters came to play, and I let them bounce around in the rain. It was LIGHT rain, for goodness sakes. A drizzle, practically.
Raluca, I'm glad I was able to stir some fond memories for you. Yes, those kids can pile up those umbrellas pretty high!
Vanessa, you're too sweet. I'm going to purchase stock in rain gear now. :D
oh mothers! bah humbug! spoil all our fun!
I know, right? Mothers. Who needs 'em!
I love the way she's looking out from behind the umbrella. Yet another terrific work!
Arigatoo, Chris!
Hey, just thought of something. Did you know umbrella in Japanese is kasa?
Mi kasa es su casa!
I love your little glimpses of Japanese childhood. This is beautiful as always. Welcoming you back to the US, I'm sure you have such mixed feelings about leaving such a beautiful land.
Thank you for visting my blog and leaving such lovely comments. You write as well as you draw and that is remarkable. I love this illustration and the story. Little children have so much fun and so much whimsy in their lives. We need to do this more as adults. It is always fun to pretend no matter what age you are.
Hugs,
Pat
Thank you, Ellifolks. I shall miss the ultra-polite people here, that's true. The Japanese take pride in everything that they do.
Hi, Pat! Thank you. Just don't ask me to do two things at the same time. I've lost my ability to multi-task. You have the most awesome vintage creations!
Seems there's risk of losing an eye with all fun stuff! Darn it! Such an adorable, sweet illo! Reminds me of when I was a wee one. In fact, I still think there is something magical about being under an umbrella in the rain.
Ain't THAT the truth! I keep thinking of A Christmas Story.... hehehe.
Yeah, I used to love those dome-shaped umbrellas that were all clear so that it felt like you were walking in a bubble. Aaah, good times.
Holy cow, I am such a heel for not knowing you were moving back to the States. It's so awesome that you had the opportunity to live in Japan. Best of luck with the move!
Wonderful illustration!
Aw, Eric, no worries. I'm kinda partial to my heels. ;) Thanks for the good wishes!
I had so much fun laughing at you hairy-toe-Yeti and your daghter's language skills - not to mention her lazy-mum portrait! And then I got down to this beautiful beautiful image and was reminded about your moving...:( but then I remembered we're online and you're not actually leaving never to be seen again! ...Right?;)
...and that convention idea's not too bad...
The picture is so darling. Many things that children do are fun and cute. (Some are dangerous too. But, it's so grown up to think of dire consequences). I'm visiting relatives in AZ. The other day I played with my nieces and nephew. When they got scolded, I had to confess that it was my idea.
Hi, Nancy! I think I've made more blogging friends in the past few months than I've made in Tokyo, so moving will not be too emotionally traumatic for me. You can't get red of me that easy! :D
Hey, Luci! You're a just a kid at heart, and that's what I love about you.
