IF - Canned

If you're going to be an expat, Tokyo is a lovely place to be. But the tough part of being an expat, wherever you are, is that friends are always leaving for new assignments. My husband is in the financial sector, and as you know, times are tough. Though he still has his job, many of our friends here have gotten canned, and they are leaving for work in other countries.

This is our family saying "so long for now" to some very good friends who are headed to Hong Kong. I drew us as aliens, because that's what we basically are here -- foreigners.

My kids insisted I include Daddy's facial hair, even though I protested that these aliens are smooth-bodied. They're just looking out for Daddy, because Daddy's quite proud of his facial hair.

Awww, sad to hear! Hope your situation gets better, happier soon.

But I like your illustration, and the transparency of the aliens is quite interesting.

Happy Potato Greetings!

yes, it's so sad but unfortunately common fact that we haven't got enough time for friends (or they're so far from us) so we "can" them... nice illo and story too.

We're thinking of going the bittersweet expat route (again) too: going to new places but missing family and friends.

The illo looks great, and I love that your kids insisted on the facial hair!

even though it is a little sad to say goodbye and to get canned you made it look charming :)

Very nice illo. Whimsical, delightful!
What you wrote was good to read; my kids are thinking of taking a job in the far east, and they would experience what you do. Your generation is so worldly and traveled!

At first I thought this was some fun amusement type illo, it conveys fun with it's round, colorful shapes:)

But on second thought the reason of the illo is very serious. The world and love will provide, rest asured...

Bravo to the kids for sticking up for Daddy!

I remember I used to be called an alien when I live in the states. You have taken such an imaginative twist to 'canned', it is lovely work.

Oh now this is so well done! And such a great take on the prompt!!! As a expat myself, in an area where people are always moving about or being posted somewhere else, I know exactly what you're talking about.

actually, aliens have hair too...especially the insects. :D nice concept!

Ooh, I especially like the sad, droopy bunny. I am sorry you are losing friends there, but there are always new ones to be made.
But, Bella, how did you do this? Do you use a tablet? I just got one and don't know what to do with it.

we have worked in three different countries as teachers, and altho the expat community is a very close (and closed)one, i found it very unsettling to keep saying goodbye and starting with new people all over again. now back in london and things are settled, but hey-ho life is about saying goodbye! nice post. daddy's face hair rocks!

These are very uncertain times, aren't they? I wish your family all the best! Nice goatee on Daddy :)

You made a very sweet image of a difficult situation. I like your aliens and they are very expressive. At least the internet and blogs and things help with keeping in contact (even if it isn't the same.)

I don't know how you did it - combining whimsey with sadness, hard-edge with softness and sweetness, but it all works and is a beautiful illustration. It looks like you could do a whole book about the story with these characters. Love it!!!

Edrian Thomidis said...

You have created wonderful characters. They are so soft and the colorful children work so well.

It's wonderful that you involve your girls with your creativity too.

It's a beautiful illustration Bella!

Thank you all for your encouragement and kind words. Yes, the departure of friends is always hard, but I learned this year that I can make new friends like you. Just a few months ago, I never imagined I'd meet so many wonderful and talented people. Thank you!
